ROCKRGRL

ROCKRGRL Magazine (1995-2005) – was a highly influential publication for women who played music. Many artists interviewed  very early in their careers went on to enjoy mainstream success (Tegan and Sara, Sleater-Kinney, The Donnas).

ROCKRGRL started out as a 14-page, black-and-white photocopied zine. Its first issue, which hit stands in 1995, featured Gretchen Seager on the cover along with articles about that dog, the Go-Go’s, Queen Latifah, and Au Pairs. In 1999, ROCKRGRL became a full-color glossy bi-monthly magazine.

ROCKRGRL billed itself as, “a real departure from the condescending and patronizing tone found in other “women in music” magazines and web sites. No beauty tips or guilt trips here — just shop talk with fascinating artists.”

Throughout its lifespan, many famous and influential women appeared on the cover, including Shirley Manson, Chrissie Hynde, Yoko Ono, Veruca Salt, Tori Amos, Johnette Napolitano, Courtney Love, Kathleen Hanna, Joan Jett, Kat Bjelland, Tegan and Sara, Jessicka, Aimee Mann, Sleater-Kinney, Jenny Lewis and Marianne Faithfull. ROCKRGRL also gave Sleater-Kinney their very first cover.

Due to changes in the economy and the growing demand for free, web-based content, ROCKRGRL published its final issue – #57 – in November, 2005 to coincide with the ROCKRGRL Music Conference.
